For the past several years, Dazibao has developed a series called Sessions. These are punctual, event-based encounters in which an artist, curator, researcher, writer, thinker, or other invited person shares with the public an area of their work that intersects in some way with images. Past Sessions have included screenings, readings, slideshows, performances, actions, operas, discussions, tastings, meals… Artists might share ideas that are in progress, work that has never found an appropriate context, or even something completely different from what they normally bring to an audience. The series seeks to make space for the fact that art practices are heterogeneous, multidirectional, sometimes irregular, and often don’t fit within marketable frameworks. It also recognizes that some of the most exciting and interesting work is so precisely because it doesn’t conform to expected models of presentation.
