Hubert Caron-Guay’s installation Arroyos puts into sharp focus the long, dangerous, and obstacle-ridden trajectory taken daily by hundreds of migrants attempting to weave their way from the southeast corner of Mexico to a US border crossing below Tucson, Arizona. It brings us face-to-face with many individuals undertaking this journey, highlighting their hopes, fears, and sacrifices through intimate interview footage.

Emphasizing precise details of the political, personal, and physical challenges facing migrants, Arroyos offers a point of departure for discussing a number of issues that both encompass and extend beyond the specific context of today’s Mexico: What hidden structures are in place to impede or facilitate international passage? What is to be learned from immersion into marginalized communities, and how does this work compare to what can be accomplished on a local level? What are the responsibilities of a country like Canada, or a city like Montreal, in light of the current migrant crisis?

To continue this line of questioning, Dazibao invites you to a public conversation between the artist and Montreal-based lawyer Véronique Lamontagne, whose legal practice encompasses over twenty years of experience in the areas of governance, justice reforms, immigration and human rights, both in Canada and internationally.
