and beneath these clouds
Having previously studied in journalism and philosophy, Brandon Poole’s art practice is developed around research, using interviews and fieldwork to examine the entwined histories and speculative futures of media and the image.
The artist’s first solo exhibition in Montréal inquires into the status of the image and the way it shapes or replaces real-life events. Using forensic reports, CCTV recordings, and material sourced from the corporate collection of Montréal-based flight simulation manufacturer, Canadian Aviation Electronics, Poole frames simulation as a kind of storytelling with a complicated relationship to the real: one in which fragmental yet infinite data determines the understanding of events — the threshold of realness hinging on the authority assigned to such data.
