Rodrigue Mouchez Armendariz Appointed General and Artistic Director of Dazibao

Dazibao, a leading Montreal centre for contemporary image-based practices, has appointed Rodrigue Mouchez Armendariz as its new General and Artistic Director. He joins the centre from AGUAS, the independent curatorial platform he founded in 2017. Currently based in Barcelona, he will relocate to Montreal in Spring 2026.

Mouchez Armendariz is a French-Mexican artist, curator, and researcher. He has led projects across Latin America, Europe, and North America. Through AGUAS, he initiated and developed exhibitions, public programs, and long-term research initiatives in collaboration with artists, curators, scholars, and writers. Examining how contemporary cultural production reflects and challenges the structures that determine what becomes visible and how meaning circulates, his work is attentive to the ways in which certain narratives gain prominence while others remain marginal, focusing in particular on memory, transmission, and translation.

“Rodrigue brings a rare combination of curatorial rigour, international perspective, and sustained commitment to artists,” said Chih-Chien Wang, President of Dazibao’s Board of Directors. “His vision recognizes both the political and poetic aspects of image-based practices and reinforces Dazibao’s role at the local and international levels.”

He succeeds France Choinière, who led Dazibao for nearly three decades, broadening its editorial program, initiating innovative exhibitions and public projects, and establishing the centre’s position as a leading reference point for contemporary image-based practices in Canada.

At Dazibao, Mouchez Armendariz will prioritize sustained support for artists working with image in Montreal and across Quebec, reinforcing local artistic trajectories and fostering their circulation nationally and internationally. He also plans to develop group exhibitions based on collaborative research with curators and institutions from Latin America, Europe, and North Africa, positioning Dazibao within an international dialogue while remaining firmly rooted in its local context.

I aim to build on the rigorous work that defines Dazibao, affirming image as a strategic instrument for critical thinking and dialogue. My goal is to strengthen sustainable support for artists in Quebec and Canada and to build reciprocal international partnerships that are attentive to political and cultural contexts.

Through AGUAS, the curatorial platform he founded in 2017, and in collaboration with artists, writers, and scholars, he has led collective projects that integrate artistic practice, critical research, and the exploration of how overlooked histories are rewritten, how translation can serve as a tool for reflective practice, and how transdisciplinary approaches foster creation and critical dialogue. He has collaborated with public institutions and independent spaces across Europe, Latin America, and North America. Recent projects include: Performing Colonial Toxicity by Samia Henni (DOC, Paris, 2025), Un intersticio en todas partes a la vez by Iagor Peres and Mercedes Pimiento (AGUAS, Barcelona, 2024), and Fuel for Fire by Carolina Caycedo (AGUAS, Barcelona, 2023).
