Thomas Kneubühler
Landing Sites

From November 15, 2018 to January 26, 2019
Opening on November 15 at 7 pm

Here, we are looking at notions of transmission, from the most elementary sense of “transmitting a message”, right up to its various technological manifestations. Amanda Dawn Christie, Omar Elhamy & Casper Wolski, and Thomas Kneubühler treat the importance of means of communication — of transmitting — on both the geopolitical and human levels. By taking as our anchor point the word transmit, whose etymology is closer to pathway than it is to send, we can also consider terms such as transfer, transcribe, transit, transpose and ultimately transform, and thereby examine how movements in time and space act on those who experience them.

At the center of this work are the landing sites of the submarine fibre optic cable FLAG Atlantic-1. Documenting the locations in Long Island (US), and Brittany (France), where the cable begins and ends, Kneubühler expands his inquiry into transatlantic communications to address the accelerating speed of information transmission and it’s impact on those who stay in touch from afar.

Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Thomas Kneubühler has been based in Montréal since 2000. He obtained an MFA at Concordia University in 2003. Whether through photography, video or installation, his practice examines the impact of technologies on social and societal constructions. He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery 44 (Toronto, 2011), VU (Québec, 2000), and AXENÉO7 (Gatineau, 2006). He has recently participated in group exhibitions in Canada and Europe, including at the Patrick Mikhail Gallery (Montréal, 2017), at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (2012-2013) and at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2011). In 2006, he collaborated with Dazibao for the publication of Private Property/Propriété privée. In 2011, he received the Pratt & Whitney Canada Prize of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
