For Session 30, Joyce Joumaa will do a presentation on the history of one of the world’s oldest salt mines, focusing on the policy that, under the Ottoman empire’s colonization, forbade salt production. Thinking through salt’s mundanity and inspired by the Turkish soap opera Harim Al Soltan, the artist addresses a letter to Sultan Suleiman whose story is depicted in the series as that of the greatest Ottoman conqueror. Finally, Joumaa will present an excerpt from her recent documentary film, which seeks to negotiate with the disappearance of labor.
