The Gwangju Theatre

Warmer Than The World Around Us was filmed at the Gwangju Theatre, today one of South Korea’s oldest functioning single screen cinemas. The 86-year-old cinema is made up of three levels consisting of 865 seats positioned onto one central screen.

As a reminder of the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, the cinema maintains a separate entrance on the first floor, including a sign reading “Imgeom-seok” (inspection seat). Imgeom-seok was utilized by the Japanese police to censor content, and to conduct surveillance on Korean people.

Today the theatre operates as a functioning museum of cinema, highlighting the history of moving images, and their dissemination in Korea.
