Session 8 | Esther Bourdages

For Session 8, Esther Bourdages analyses the curious form of musical notation known as the graphic score. Making such graphic scores an artistic material open to interpretation and improvisation, Bourdages explores the links between the visual and audio fields. She will present a selection of works from the 1960s to today by sound artists, visual artists, musicians and choreographers as she continues to examine the semantic aspects of graphic notation.

An art historian, author and independent curator, Esther Bourdages holds a master’s degree in art history from the Université de Montréal. Her interests lie in sculpture in the broad sense (in situ art and installation) in relation with sound art and digital art. She organises improvised music concerts and regularly performs internationally, notably in the United States and France. Privileging improvisation, she plays the turntable, manipulates vinyl records and records sound samples to create rough, non-linear sound works, punctuated by adulterated aural quotations and abstract sounds.
