Reservation and wearing a mask required
The presentation will start at 7 pm sharp
For Session 29, Joyce Joumaa will do a presentation on the history of one of the world’s oldest salt mines, focusing on the policy that, under the Ottoman empire’s colonization, forbade salt production. Thinking through salt’s mundanity and inspired by the Turkish soap opera Harim Al Soltan, the artist addresses a letter to Sultan Suleiman whose story is depicted in the series as that of the greatest Ottoman conqueror. Finally, Joumaa will present an excerpt from her recent documentary film, which seeks to negotiate with the disappearance of labor.
Joyce Joumaa is a video artist based in Montreal. After growing up in Tripoli, Lebanon, she pursued a BFA in Film Studies at Concordia University. Her work explores the political phenomenology of language, post-colonial education and video documentation as a fictional archive. She is the recipient of the 2021-2022 Emerging Curator Residency Program at the CCA, the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
Dazibao thanks the artist for her generous collaboration as well as its advisory programming committee for its support.
