Rediscovered after nearly 100 years and completed, The Lost has finally arrived in your favourite theater!
For one night only, Dazibao presents The Lost, the sixth work in Reynold Reynolds’ exhibition Almost Six Pieces. In 2011, during a stay in Germany, Reynold Reynolds came upon the mysterious reels of a film shot in Berlin in the 1930s and interrupted by the turbulences of Nazism. Although it was thought this film had been lost forever, Reynolds undertook to bring it back to life by completing the work of the deceased filmmaker.
In the 1930s a young English writer, Christopher, comes to Berlin and moves into a cabaret where an eccentric old man adopts young performers, dancers, artists and musicians to live and work in his building. In the basement Christopher witnesses experiments on the edge of life and death, which seem more mysterious than scientific. While he settles in, wanders the city and begins to write, the cabaret is under threat from upstanding citizens and authorities, who claim that what goes on in the building is immoral.
The Lost is a project in conjunction with the innovative research project ¡REMEDIATE!, a cooperation between Akademie Schloss Solitude and Merz Akademie – Hochschule für Gestaltung, Kunst und Medien; supported by MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg and the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation (LFK), Stuttgart- Germany.
Born in Alaska, Reynold Reynolds holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His work has been the subject of exhibitions around the world at venues such as the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), MoMA PS1 (New York), the Centre de la photographie (Geneva), the Christopher Grimes Gallery (California) and the Museu de Arte Moderna (Rio de Janeiro). His work has been shown in several biennials, including the Biennale of Moving Images (Geneva), the Berlin Biennale, the Bienal de Arte Contemporaneo del Fin del Mundo (Argentina) and the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.
